Questrade Review 2024: What matters to Canadian investors

This service is similar to Wealthsimple Invest and RBC InvestEase and provides complete portfolio management for a small fee. No, Questrade no longer charges an inactivity fee (i.e. account maintenance fee) when you have a small account balance. This is unlike TD Direct Investing and some other bank-owned brokerages in Canada. They have been slow to respond to our new brokers, and we have had to contact them numerous times to straighten out problems that should have been simple. While the platform was great and the app was decent, but I would hesitate to go back to them unless they make significant improvements to their customer service. The traditional Quebecois cuisine descends from 16th-century French cuisine, the fur trade and a history of hunting. Quebec’s cuisine has also been influenced by learning from First Nation, by English cuisine and by American cuisine.

Nearby inhabitants traded their farm surpluses and firewood for imported goods from France at the two city markets. The combination of rich soils and the lowlands’ relatively warm climate makes this valley the most prolific agricultural area of Quebec. The rural part of the landscape is divided into narrow rectangular tracts of land that extend from the river and date back to the seigneurial system.

Cultural events

For exports, it leans on the key industries of aeronautics, hydroelectricity, mining, pharmaceuticals, aluminum, wood, and paper. It is also renowned for its culture; the province produces literature, music, films, TV shows, festivals, and more. Another point at the western edge of the province, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, is reachable in a couple of hours from North Bay, Ontario by road. English-speaking Quebecers are generally bilingual and reside mostly in the Montreal area, where 25% of the population speaks English at home. Conversations between anglophones and francophones often slip unconsciously between English and French as a mutual show of respect. This can be confusing if you’re not bilingual, and a look of puzzlement will generally signal a switch back to a language everyone can understand. Another independence referendum was held in 1995, which was again defeated, although this time by a much smaller margin (with 49.4% voting for sovereignty and 50.6% voting to remain a part of Canada). Since then, the movement for sovereignty has declined (but hasn’t completely disappeared either), although many Quebecers still feel that their province should be recognized as distinct within Canada. Stretching from the Gaspé Peninsula to the border of the United States, Quebec’s Appalachian Uplands region is the northern extension of the Appalachian Mountains.

Other major parties include the Liberal Party (recognized for supporting the Anglophone and Allophone minorities), the left-wing nationalist and separatist Québec solidaire, and the Parti Quebecois. The Parti Quebecois, and to a lesser extent the Liberal Party, are losing considerable ground, although the Liberals can still count on the votes of minorities, allowing them to remain influential, and the city of Montreal continues to be a Liberal stronghold. The majority of the population lives in the St. Lawrence River’s vicinity, in the southern portion of the province. The population is largely urbanized; nearly 50% of Quebecers live in the metropolitan area of Montreal.

From the west in Windsor, London, Toronto, and other locations along the Golden Horseshoe, the main option is the Highway 401 (six hours by car from Toronto) – part of the beaten-path Windsor-Quebec corridor. The days when immigrants arrived in Québec by boat via the quarantine station at Grosse Isle are long over, but visitors with a bit of time can enjoy any one of the many cruises available along the St. Lawrence River. Like the rest of Canada, Quebec, particularly Montreal, is home to migrant communities from all over the world and some neighbourhoods may have a primary language other than French or English. Services are often available in Chinese at shops and banks in Montreal’s Chinatown.

The majority of the population consists of French-Canadians, the descendants of 17th century French settlers who have resisted centuries of pressure to assimilate into Anglo society. That tradition continues to this day, and modern Quebec is a vibrant, fascinating place whose residents remain determined as ever to preserve a distinctive culture and unique values. Quebec has 4 national parks operated by the federal government, and 27 parks run by a Quebec government agency, which are also called “national parks”. Quebec has more land area than any other Canadian province, but fewer people than Ontario, and much of the population is concentrated in a corridor which follows the St. Lawrence River through Montreal and Quebec City.

Most can speak at least some English as well, with the city of Montreal — the historic home of Quebec’s powerful English-speaking minority — the most functionally bilingual place in Canada. Protecting and strengthening the use of the French language has historically been the central project of Quebec patriotism, and since the 1970s, the provincial government has passed a number of laws that limit the use of English in business, schools, and — most infamously — public signs and advertisements. The legal centrepiece of this is the Charter of the French Language, also known as Bill 101, whose strict rules have governed Quebec language policy for over 40 years. Provincial government signs (highway signs, government buildings, hospitals, etc.) are generally posted solely in French. Services at provincial and municipal government offices are also often available in French only, though they are available in English in areas with significant Anglophone (English-speaking) populations. The visibility of commercial signs and billboards in English and other languages is restricted by law (except for English-language media and cultural venues such as theatres, cinemas and bookstores).

Quebec’s most recent separatist government only held office for a year and a half (September 2012 to April 2014) and in the 2011 and 2015 federal elections, most separatist candidates for parliament were defeated. Since the French settlers in North America greatly outnumbered the English, the victorious British quickly concluded that New France — soon renamed Quebec — could only be effectively governed as a British colony if its were permitted to retain their distinct cultural traditions. A British law known as the Quebec Act (1774) allowed residents to keep speaking French and worshipping in the Catholic Church, and generally maintain the same way of life they had under French rule. Political and economic power, however, was concentrated in the hands of a small, English-speaking elite. Under their rule, Quebec remained a largely rural, borderline feudal society well into the 20th century. For most of their history, the majority of Quebeckers lived mostly meagre lives as sustenance farmers, with Catholic clergy playing an enormous role in education and politics.
